Advanced Surface Treatment (AST) has taken laser vision correction to a new level. This latest development is an excellent new alternative that merits consideration by just about anyone requiring vision correction. AST is an especially good option for people who have been previously advised that their eyes are not suitable for LASIK, or whose active lifestyles may preclude them from having that procedure.
Advanced Surface Treatment (AST) is a laser vision correction procedure used to correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, and presbyopia.
Using the latest in custom, wavefront optimized excimer laser technology, we can correct most visual problems, thereby reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses. The laser is cool ultraviolet light and produces no heat. During refractive surgery, microscopically thin layers of tissue are gently removed with each pulse of the laser, permanently reshaping the cornea to allow better vision.
In contrast to LASIK, we leave the cornea intact and simply remove the surface skin (epithelium), prior to utilizing the laser to change the shaper of the cornea. This technique is very safe, noninvasive, and time tested. It is particularly well suited for patients with high levels of correction, dry eye syndrome, and thin corneas. Although the healing process is slightly longer with AST versus LASIK, the end results are equally good and the retreatment rate is very low.
Dr. O’Brien will advise you as to which refractive surgery is the safest and most effective for your particular vision correction needs. During your complimentary consultation, you will undergo a thorough examination to determine which procedure is best suited for you.
There are risks associated with refractive surgery. There is a risk of dry eye syndrome, which can be severe; the possible need for glasses or contact lenses after surgery; visual symptoms including halos, glare, starbursts, and double vision, which can be debilitating; and the loss of vision.
