The Problem
More than half of all Americans develop cataracts by the time they reach the age of 80. The lens in the eye is normally clear and as you age the lens can become cloudy in one or both eyes and causes blurred vision. Cataracts form when the tissue that focuses light onto the retina clouds and blocks the changes in light from the retina, which prevents nerve signals from telling the brain what it is seeing.
The Solution
Cataracts can be easily corrected with manual cataract surgery, one of the safest and most successfully performed surgical procedures in the US or laser cataract surgery. After surgery, a new artificial lens is implanted in the eye to replace the cloudy lens removed. This artificial lens is called an intraocular lens, or IOL. Just as prescription glasses or contacts, IOLs come in a variety of focusing powers to improve your vision. Whichever IOL you choose, you can rest assured that cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective procedures performed today.
The Procedure
A tiny incision is made at the front of your eye. A small tool is then used to break up the eye’s natural lens and gently suctioned out before the IOL is placed. The IOL is made of silicone or acrylic and coated for protection from the sun’s ultraviolet rays.
Here are some of the different IOLs available that can be tailored based on your specific vision needs:
- • Monofocal IOLs – The most common type of lens used with cataract surgery.
- • Multifocal IOLs – For both distance and near focus at the same time.
- • Accommodative IOLs – These lenses change shape inside your eye to allow for focusing at different distances.
- • Toric IOLs – For those with an astigmatism, which is caused by an uneven cornea, this lens is used to correct both the cataract and an astigmatism simultaneously.
